ADAM: Creating Dance Awareness
By Jasmine Rios

Over the last few months, Dance San Diego magazine (DSD) and Mina Communications (MC) have been preparing for San Diego's first August Dance Awareness Month (ADAM) initiative. Since the announcement of our intentions, many artists within the dance community have shown a sincere desire to help the cause.

Congress Supports
ADAM
These expressions of gratitude and encouragement have helped validate the importance of our efforts to strengthen the San Diego dance community by opening new channels of communication between artists, the media and various business sectors that have influence over the well-being of the arts.

The concept of a dance awareness movement in San Diego was first initiated in 1996, when Eveoke Dance Theatre held their first Celebrate Dance Festival (CDF). Today, the CDF is an annual tradition that has become Southern California's largest dance event of its kind. The CDF has served as a valuable exposure outlet for hundreds of dancers over the years, and we are grateful to the CDF for being the source of our inspiration in establishing the August Dance Awareness Month initiative. This year's CDF from Aug. 22-24 will be the major event highlight of the inaugural 2008 dance awareness campaign.

Public relations efforts for ADAM have been in progress since May. Issues pertaining to the needs for funding, media coverage, patronage, and a proper performance venue suitable for the art of dance have been presented to the media and the corporate and philanthropic community. Communication outlets used include news releases, case studies and newsletters, all of which are available for public viewing on the danceawareness.com and minacommunications.com Web sites. (To read the complete article, please see the August/September 2008 issue of Dance San Diego.)
